On 8 June 2011, as part of the “Tallinn — European Capital of Culture” programme, the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the Nokia Concert Hall, conducted by Vladimir Spivakov, the world-renowned talented musician, excellent violinist and conductor.
The orchestra consists of musicians from the best symphony orchestras in Russia, laureates of international competitions who have worked with prominent conductors from Russia and other countries. Vladimir Spivakov has remained the artistic director and chief conductor of the orchestra since its foundation. Engaged in numerous creative events, the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra has evolved into one of Russia’s leading symphony orchestras, earning the love of its audiences and gaining recognition from experts.
In addition to Vladimir Spivakov, many world-famous musicians cooperate with the orchestra and prepare new programmes, including chief guest conductor Ion Marin, conductors James Conlion and Alexander Lazarev, as well as Krzysztof Penderecki, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, John Nelson, Hans Graf, George Cleve, Okko Kamu, Michel Plasson and Eri Klas.
Music critics praise the technically impeccable mastery of the musicians, the perfectly attuned harmony of the orchestra and the exceptionally emotional musical imagery with the finest nuances well preserved. “Perhaps the most valuable feature of the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra is its passionate and emotional manner of performance, which is very rare in the modern world, essentially devoid of great passions,” said the unrivalled Fanny Ardant, who performed the Jeanne d'Arc oratorio with the orchestra.
Every year the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra participates in Vladimir Spivakov’s international music festival in France and regularly tours the US, countries in Western Europe, Japan and the region of South-East Asia. The orchestra has recorded several CDs of works by Tchaikovsky, Rakhmaninov and Schwartz. In 2010 two new albums have been published for Sony Music.
The unique repertoire of the orchestra consists not only of the most treasured works of classical music from Russia and the world, but also of modern pieces written especially for the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra. The programme of the concert in Tallinn will be confirmed in early 2011.
The concert of the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra will be the crowning musical event of the year. This guest performance is organised by the Artmusic concert agency.
The Tallinn 2011 Foundation is an independent organisation tasked with compilation and coordination of the “Tallinn — European Capital of Culture” programme.
